Leadership | New Associate Vice President for Doctoral Education 

As of 1 January 2025, we are very pleased to welcome Prof. Anne-Marie Kermarrec as the new Associate Vice President for Doctoral and Lifelong Education (AVP-DLE). We would like to extend our warmest thanks to Prof. Annalisa Buffa for her outstanding leadership and dedication to the Doctoral School. We wish her every success in her new role as Associate Vice President for Research (AVP-R).

Please note the renaming of the Associate Vice Presidency for Postgraduate Education (AVP-PGE) to Associate Vice Presidency for Doctoral and Lifelong Education (AVP-DLE).


Doctoral Program Directors | Appointments

Prof. Mats Stensrud has been appointed Director of the doctoral program in Mathematics (EDMA) for a mandate from January 1, 2025 to December 31, 2028. 

Prof. Mark Pauly has been appointed Director of the doctoral program in Computer and Communication Sciences (EDIC) for a mandate from January 1, 2025 to December 31, 2028.

We thank you for your commitment and wish you and your colleagues every success in running your program.


Doctoral Program Thesis Distinction | 35 distinguished PhDs in 2024

Created seven years ago, the "Doctoral Program Thesis Distinction" aims to highlight research work of exceptional quality. For this eighth edition, 35 of the 459 doctors who defended their thesis over the academic year 2023-2024 have been recognized with this award. Each laureate has received a certificate as well as an engraved card holder offered by EPFL. Our heartfelt congratulations to the laureates for their outstanding contributions to research!

Transversal Skills Courses | Interdisciplinary seminar series (ENG-647)

A new course developed by the CCTC and the Doctoral School available to all EPFL PhD candidates giving 1 ECTS. This course will allow you to develop your interdisciplinary research skills and network. Through experiential learning and reflection, you will learn how to present your PhD work to an interdisciplinary audience, how to give and receive feedback, and you will have unique opportunities to engage with the EPFL community at large.

February 13, 2025 – May 22, 2025 | 30 participants max

PhD Excellence Program | Apply now for the 2025 cohort

This program is ideal for those looking to pursue careers beyond academia, whether in industry, science policy, or entrepreneurship. It is open to EPFL doctoral candidates in all research fields in any of the 22 doctoral programs, who are at the beginning of their PhD studies and have passed their candidacy exam by the time the program starts on May 15, 2024. The call for applications is currently open to the 4th cohort, and we encourage all eligible PhD candidates to seize this exciting opportunity!

ETH Summer SchoolResearch Data Management

This ETH Summer School is organized by ETH Zurich and is aimed at doctoral candidates and postdocs within the ETH domain. It gives you an extensive overview of research data management (RDM), its principles as well as its practical implications and useful tools for early career scientists. The Summer School builds on the internationally established “FAIR Data” principles.

Within the framework of the CYD fellowships, jointly launched by EPFL with the Cyber-Defence (CYD) Campus with the aim to promote research and innovation in cyber-defence, a diverse range of fellowship opportunities is now open in Switzerland aimed at Master, Doctoral and Postdoctoral researchers as well as at future entrepreneurs:

The EuroTeQ Challenge Day | January 28, 2025

Join the European network with your innovative solution to tackle societal challenges! We are looking for PhD candidates to collaborate on real-world challenges and present innovative ideas for a sustainable future to leading universities and industrial partners across Europe. 

This is your chance to join a challenge proposed by our external partners (e.g., Logitech, WWF, Pronatura, etc.) and be part of a dynamic team representing EPFL at the upcoming EuroTeQathon in Eindhoven, on June 14-16, 2025, where top engineering universities will present groundbreaking innovations. During the event, you’ll learn about the challenges, form teams, and start preparing for the next steps, which include developing solutions, receiving mentoring, and gaining training. As always, the event will conclude with a small aperitif from 18:00 to 19:00.
