Employee Satisfaction survey | Deadline: 2 June 2023

As you know, an employee satisfaction survey was launched on May 2nd. This survey will serve as a barometer of your overall satisfaction at EFPL. It will allow the management to know, for example, if you find balance between your private and professional life, if you think the culture of respect is sufficiently established at EPFL or if you are satisfied with your salary conditions and your degree of autonomy.

The external partner, Empiricon (epfl_2023@empiriconmail.ch), will be sending out a final friendly reminder on May 31st. If you haven't had the time yet, the Doctoral School encourages you to give your opinion before June 2nd. A high participation rate will allow EPFL to define priorities and concrete actions that are in line with the expectations of the majority of us.
Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to send these to enquetesatisfaction@epfl.ch

EPFL - ETH Zürich Summer schools | June and July

Correlative Microscopy, 19-23 June 2023, EPFL (VD)

The objective of the summer school on correlative microscopy is to introduce various correlative microscopy techniques, provide strategies on sample preparation, data collection and data processing, as well as provide workshops for hands-on experience with correlative microscopy techniques. Together with hand-on workshops, upon completion of the summer school, the attendee should be knowledgeable on various correlative microscopy modalities, their requirements, and the possibilities of their application in current or future research projects. We also wish that this event to serve as an opportunity to discuss research problems with specialists as well as share diverse strategies to address diverse scientific problems.

Nanophotonics and its applications for society, 10-14 July 2023, EPFL (VD)

The 5-day summer school is designed to bring together students and professors focusing on applied photonics in micro- and nanosystems. The program is divided into three key societal issues that can be addressed with applied nanophotonics: energy, sensing and communication. You will have the opportunity to attend seminars with the aim of stimulating discussion, a computational workshop, on-site lab tours and poster presentations (2 ECTS). The goal of the school is to endorse collaborative projects between students and professors from different nanophotonics backgrounds. The summer school is hosted by EPFL Lausanne from 10th-14th of July with activities for exploring the beautiful city as well as visiting Montreux Jazz Festival.

Science and Policy: how to bridge the gap?, 10-14 July 2023, Beatenberg (BE)

Scientific discoveries undoubtedly play an essential role in shaping the future of society, but there is still a significant gap between science and policymaking. The COVID-19 pandemic and the recent energy crisis due to the war in Ukraine have shown the importance of efficient collaboration between scientists and politicians. This summer school aims to illustrate how natural sciences and engineering impact society, influence public policymakers and how to bridge the gap between them.

Climate and Sustainability Action Week (CSAW) | 11 - 15 september 2023

The CSAW is a non credited summer school (in French) which aims to empower students to become change agents by providing them with practices and tools for self-awareness, collaboration and system change. Registration is now open, places are limited to 30 people (15 UNIL, 15 EPFL), allocated on a "first come, first served" basis. More info here

Transversal Skills Courses | “The Practice of Ethics in Engineering Research”

A new EDOC transversal skills course has been accepted at the last meeting of the Doctoral Commission (Cdoct), that could grant 2 ECTS credits. The “The Practice of Ethics in Engineering Research” course examines the human role, responsibility and agency in responding to ethical issues through the analysis of engineering research and practice. Wicked problem mapping is used as a method to understand cause–effect relations defining ethical challenges, to redefine these as an opportunity to innovate. It will provide doctoral candidates with skills to generate engineering solutions that prevent, mitigate or make one act upon ethical issues or dilemmas. It will be will be taught by Dr Laura Ferrarello, lecturer and scientist at EPFL lab HERUS.
Stay tuned for exact course dates and in the meantime, don't forget to visit regularly the Transferable Skills Courses website to discover a range of courses available to doctoral students.
