We hope you had a great summer holiday and had the opportunity to relax and recharge your batteries. Now, as you transition back to your thesis work and dive into your research, we wish you a smooth and productive start. Academic calendar | One week holiday

As you probably already know, a week's holiday has been introduced for the next autumn semester, from 21 to 25 October 2024. In order to maintain a 14-week semester, the start of the academic year has been brought forward by one week, which means that the next academic year will begin on 9 September 2024. This week's holiday in the middle of the semester will provide a much-welcomed respite during a busy period.

NEW! Being a Leader and Exercising Leadership as your Natural Self-Expression | 18, 19, 20 and 25, 26, 27 November 2024 | Full days  

What is leadership? The experts themselves don’t agree on the definition. In this highly interactive, challenging and stimulating course, you will discover that leadership is not what you thought it was, that everyone can be a leader, and that leadership starts with being able to lead yourself.

Using a methodology continuously developed over the last 2 decades, this unique leadership course makes this bold promise: to leave you being a leader and exercising leadership effectively as your natural self-expression.

NEW! Create-Protect-Innovate: Bringing ideas to market (ENG-645) | 4 November 2024 – 21 February 2025 | online course with live sessions

The course "Create – Protect – Innovate: Bringing ideas to market" (ENG-645) is an online course developed by the European Patent Office and is available to EPFL PhD candidates giving 2 ECTS. It will teach you how to protect inventions and bring them to market and provide you with valuable insights into the world of innovation. It consists of two parts (entry and advanced level), each containing five self-paced modules. The course offers you unique opportunities to follow inventors' real-life stories, understand why and how they patent their inventions and learn how intellectual property rights (IPRs) can be integrated into business strategies.

Motion Design for Science (ENG-640) | 13 – 17 September 2024 | 18 participants max.

This course is designed to empower students with skills in motion design, allowing them to breathe life into their ideas & scientific figures. We will work on exercises to animate scientific images, build towards animating a figure, then each student will design & animate their own work. This is an introductory course to motion design for science, you do not need to have experience in the software.

Please note that you will have to watch an introductory video and complete an intro exercise (around 1 hour of work) before the beginning of the class

Communication in science and technology (ENG-616) | 27 September – 20 December 2024 | 31 participants max.  

4th edition of the yearly world-class course on science communication coming soon, with many experts from the field, such as Kashmir Hill (The New York Times), Antonio Regalado (MIT Technology Review), Alok Jha (The Economist), Deborah Blum (The Knight Science Journalism Program at MIT), and many more!

Learn how to tell compelling science stories, engage with media and master the art of scientific writing. Whether you're aiming to share your research with the public or enhance your professional skills, this course is for you. Don't miss out!

The Practice of Ethics in Engineering Research (ENG-641) | 1 October – 17 December 2024 

Through facilitated debates and the systemic analysis of ethical challenges in engineering and scientific research, the course outlines how human agency can respond to these dilemmas to reframe these as opportunities for innovation. In this course, human decision–making is used as a vehicle to outline a good practice of engineering research and practice.

This is your chance to join this annual popular communication contest! The aim of the course is to improve your communication skills. You will learn to summarize the methodology and conclusions of your thesis in 180 seconds and communicate clearly, accurately, enthusiastically and successfully your key results and research significance to the general public.

Creating & capturing value from innovative (ENG-642) | 1822 November 2024 | 25 participants max.  

In this hands-on course, we will learn how to identify and evaluate business opportunities stemming from an innovative technology, and how to set the ground for a successful entrepreneurial endeavor.

Research and Doctoral Awards Ceremony | 28 November 2024

During this ceremony EPFL will celebrate all doctoral graduates who will have completed their thesis by November 2024, and will present the EPFL Research and Doctorate awards. This will be a great opportunity to get together with graduates, faculty, friends and family to commemorate this incredible achievement. We look forward to welcoming all members of the doctoral community to this festive occasion. Official invitations will follow soon.
Please note, that the Doctoral Program Thesis Distinctions are not presented at this event, but are given independently in each programme.

This year, for the first time, we are would like to create a special video featuring some of your favourite memories of your doctoral journey. Whether it's a snapshot of a breakthrough, a video of an event that meant a lot to you or that brought you closer to your colleagues/ peers/ faculty, meeting with people who inspired you, overcoming difficult times, pictures taken at a team outing, an EPFL event, a challenge completed or simply a moment of laughter. Whether it happened on the EPFL campus or outside, alone or with others, we invite you to share them with us by uploading them to Switch Drive using this link until 16 September 2024
